Sioux Lookout Hostel
Sioux Lookout, Ontario
A new 3,720 sq.m. (40,000 sq.ft.) hostel to serve 29 First Nations in the Sioux Lookout Region. The facility will be adjacent to the new hospital. The project was completed in 2011 at a construction cost of $12,000,000. The Integrated Design Process (IDP) was utilized.
The central gathering place features a central drum, supported by 13 grandfathers. The stone used in the Hostel was acquired from local quarries, and each of the 30 First Nations that came together in the creation of the Hostel are identified with a plaque in the stone wall. Designed as a home away from home, the Hostel is uniquely designed to facilitate interaction in common areas, including kitchens.
