Grandmother Turtle Lodge

Sagkeeng, Manitoba

The Grandmother Turtle Lodge is an international centre for indigenous education and wellness.

The concept is based on ideas of self-sufficiency, environmental sustainability and cultural revitalization. Turtle imagery, reflecting the original vision of an Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) elder, forms the basis of the structure and interior layout. Gatherings for up to 500 people could be accommodated in the centre space along with classrooms surrounding this space supporting 20-30 people each. The project would utilize straw-bale exterior walls, glulam wood structure and incorporate a green roof to provide habitat and areas for growing traditional medicinal plants and food. Energy requirements are intended to be satisfied by the use of geothermal heating and cooling, and solar arrays.
