Southwood Development

Visionary (re)Generation Open Competition

Fort Garry Campus, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba

With over forty entries in this international competition, ft3 entered phase one with a team of five talented individuals. In response to the competition brief, ft3 created a proposal that responds to the need for student housing, connections to the existing campus, the Red River and the city.

Our submission proposes a new plaza to connect the existing stadium to the core campus with a new main BRT station, a new commercial centre and an outdoor plaza. Southwood Golf Course is transformed with 4,200 residential units, commercial zones and plazas all powered and heated with organic conversion. The proposed arrangement of buildings in Southwood, both in orientation and spacing, allows for the introduction of greenhouse facilities to connect to residential buildings.

Our plan also reduces surface parking and proposes new parking structures to increase green space and new recreational activities. A strong pedestrian corridor, the green line, is located around the perimeter of the Campus connecting the seven precincts of the site and the surrounding neighborhoods. This path, or green line, encourages biking, walking, running and cross-country skiing, creating a connection to a larger active transportation system that spreads through the campus.

The University of Manitoba is a destination for students and faculty from around the world. Our proposed interventions transform the Campus into a destination for the City.
