University of Calgary, Faculty of Nursing

Spatial Program and Schematic Design Study

Calgary, Alberta

With technology and teaching methods evolving at an unprecedented pace, flexibility for future growth and reconfiguration of interior space were major objectives in the redesign of the Faculty of Nursing. Faculty, students and staff were consulted to build the program and model the concept of open, interactive, flexible space to conquer space shortages and address future growth and resolve public access, security, and image issues.

Collaboration, transparency, connectedness and growth were translated into interior spaces that utilize materials and colours derived from nature: simple, pure, functional and showcasing the energy of learning. Spaces will be well lit, technologically-supported and conducive to supporting connections at all levels of the faculty.

The benefits of a re-designed Faculty of Nursing located in the Professional Faculties Building will raise the profile of the department. Injecting the premises with new energy and life by designing functionally workable spaces that support the efforts of both students and instructors will attract new students, grow the department, and attract further research resources.

Deliverables included:

  • Detailed functional programming documents, clearly outlining space and functional requirements for all identified activities and occupants.
  • Planning discussions with the project working committees to determine the various options for the relocation of the faculties.
  • Integrated Design Process workshops with client (faculty, staff, students) and ft3.
  • Conceptual layouts based on the approved program and supplemented with 3-D sketches of key areas to illustrate space characteristics.
  • Estimates of overall costs complete with highlights of known project risks.
  • A report detailing all the findings and recommendations.
