Dakota Fieldhouse
1188 Dakota St, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Dakota Fieldhouse represents the fulfillment of a community need for additional space for indoor sporting activities. The new gym addition houses three full-size basketball courts with potential for six cross-court volleyball courts, all divided with roll-up curtains. The gym main floor features a multi-use studio, change facilities, and ample storage space. The gym is open above to a mezzanine level that is framed by a 200-meter running / walking track, a 60-meter sprint track, and workout areas.
The exterior site features a connected campus approach, initiated by a strategic parking and traffic management plan that incorporates a shared-use agreement between the adjacent library and high school. Pedestrian connections to the surrounding neighbourhood will increase walkability to the facility and encourage cycling, further enhancing the active transportation infrastructure.
The project team collaborated to address various goals from a multi-faceted user group: the client’s needs, the City of Winnipeg’s requirements, and the nearby library and high school’s site safety concerns. Early on, a public open house event provided an opportunity for community concerns and feedback. The result is a community facility that is integral to the neighbourhood; engaging users of all ages and varying interests.
The project was completed on schedule in 2017 with a Grand Opening on Oct 12, 2017.
